THE PRACTICAL GUIDES
Wood-firing workshops near Melbourne: teaching, crew shifts and kiln space
A wood-firing workshop can mean learning about kiln design, joining a firing crew or booking space for work you have already made. Those purchases need different preparation. Decide whether you want teaching, a place for your pots or participation across several dates before comparing the advertised starting price.
This guide compares three current offerings at Clay Talk at Montsalvat in Eltham. It concerns booking and participation, without supplying kiln-building or firing instructions. For a shorter, different firing format, see raku workshops.

A teaching day does not establish a firing ticket
The Woodfire Kilns for Beginners page describes Owen Rye's illustrated talks, an inspection of the kilns on site, a lunch break and discussion. It is relevant both to people exploring wood firing and those considering a first kiln.
The six-hour advertised day includes its break and several teaching components. Do not interpret the title as six hours of operating a kiln, building a finished kiln or firing a crate of your own work. No such personal firing allowance is established by that teaching description.
The operator asks participants to bring their own lunch and provides tea and coffee. Before booking for a particular project, explain what you hope to learn and ask whether the day's scope fits. A design question and a request to fire finished work belong to different bookings.
Salt firing: identify the whole group before using the headline
The salt-firing description says participants join one group booking for a shared firing. Full participation includes packing, wood preparation, a firing shift and unloading. It includes up to one wine-box carton of accepted bisqued pieces per person, described as 30 × 30 × 15cm.
Its published per-person scale varies sharply with group size: A$580 each for six people and A$300 each for twelve, for example. The page explicitly warns that the booking system calculates the twelve-person bracket and will not correctly price smaller groups. It directs smaller groups to arrange the booking with the operator instead of relying on the private-session button.
For an original six-person illustration, 6 × A$580 gives A$3,480. Multiplying the A$300 headline by six would give A$1,800, understating that published bracket by A$1,680. This is conditional arithmetic, not a held place or a confirmed final group quote. Establish who counts in the firing group and what happens if that number changes.
Anagama: the work allowance comes with participation
The Anagama page describes participation from packing to unloading, including at least one full firing shift of six or eight hours. It lists one milk-crate volume of work, or one large piece, with the A$550 individual price. The A$400 rate is attached to groups of five or more.
Ask which work and shift arrangement applies to your selected ticket. A label containing “drop-off” should not erase the participation requirements stated in the description. Equally, a start date does not tell you every date you must attend: loading, the allocated shift, cooling and unloading need a complete timetable.
The salt and Anagama allowances use different container descriptions. Do not assume a milk crate and a 30 × 30 × 15cm carton hold the same load, or that a large piece is accepted solely because it fits the transport box. Send the operator the actual dimensions, clay identification, preparation and intended finish for acceptance.
Collection and postponement are part of the purchase
Both firing descriptions ask for work to be collected at unloading and warn about uncollected work after seven days. Arrange transport and an authorised collector before committing to a firing date. This is a different calendar from the ordinary firing-service comparison.
The operator reserves the option to postpone for fire-danger changes, official advice and other stated circumstances. Ask how a changed date affects the crew, your work and collection. A published date is not a guarantee that an outdoor firing can proceed unchanged.
The pages also contain conflicting cancellation language: a platform summary offers broad refund/transfer options, while operator terms restrict change-of-mind refunds and contain separate cancellation provisions. Clarify the selected booking's applicable conditions before paying rather than choosing the more generous paragraph.
