THE PRACTICAL GUIDES
Private kiln hire in Melbourne: whole loads, shared firing and collection
Private kiln hire can mean reserving a complete firing load while the studio's technician still loads, operates and unloads the kiln. It does not necessarily mean hiring equipment to use yourself. For a Melbourne maker choosing between a whole load and shared firing charged by weight, the first question is whether the work fits an accepted load, followed by the price and the full drop-off-to-collection calendar.
This guide compares published arrangements at two existing studios. It concerns commissioning a firing service, not choosing a firing temperature or certifying materials. For smaller mixed batches, also read the shared firing-service checklist.
Separate the unit you are buying
| Existing studio and format | What the booking covers | What needs confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| Northcote Pottery Supplies, Brunswick East: private kiln | A selected kiln booking, with loading and unloading performed by NPS staff. | Accepted pieces, packing fit, selected kiln price and arrangements for any work that does not fit. |
| Northcote: general firing | Shared service advertised at A$10/kg, with a A$10 minimum, weighed and prepaid at drop-off. | The relevant firing, accepted materials and when the finished work is ready; the published usual turnaround is not a deadline. |
| Adele Macer Ceramics, Thornbury: K6 Tetlow kiln service | A whole kiln load, with studio inspection and loading decisions. | Fit, firing specification, quote and date. Shared firing is unavailable unless explicitly offered. |
Build a load brief before comparing prices
Two batches with the same weight can occupy very different amounts of space. Twelve kilograms of compact pieces and twelve kilograms of tall or wide pieces do not establish the same packing fit. A kiln's advertised internal dimensions are also not a promise that every centimetre can be filled with your work. Let the operator assess the actual pieces and loading requirements.
Prepare a short manifest: number of pieces, largest dimensions, photographs, clay and glaze identification, the requested firing service and any earlier firing history the technician needs. Identify the batch owner and a collection contact. Ask which information must accompany each piece, how work must arrive and which items require separate approval. Follow the operator's requirements rather than treating a generic online firing recipe as permission.
Northcote's private-hire page lists several kiln sizes and different limits. The selection should follow the accepted work and specification. This review does not establish a single whole-kiln price, so ask for the selected booking total instead of assuming it equals a per-kilogram rate.
Northcote: plan the booking and overflow separately
The private-hire page requires advance payment and work delivered before 11am on the booking day. It says late work will not be fired that day and the booking is not refunded. Only NPS staff load and unload. Your brief and drop-off therefore need to be ready before that cutoff; booking a kiln does not buy time for staff to finish preparing the pieces.
The firing terms require prepared, securely packed work labelled with the name, date and kiln number. They say staff cannot glaze, clean or assemble the work, and can reject unsuitable pieces. They also say overflow cannot be fired the same day. The private-hire page describes weighing leftovers and contacting the customer about general firing costs. Agree whether leftovers will be collected or considered for a later general firing, with a separate price and timing; do not assume an all-inclusive overflow service.
For a simple planning example, an accepted 12kg drop-off charged at the published general firing rate would be 12 × A$10 = A$120 for that firing. If the work needs another firing, that is another service to price. This calculation does not tell you whether the same pieces fit a private kiln, what that booking costs, or which option finishes first. Compare the whole-load quote only after the fit is accepted.
Adele Macer: use the kiln section of the terms
Adele Macer's terms of service contain a specific K6 Tetlow kiln-hire section alongside class conditions. The kiln section describes full loads, staff inspection and studio control over loading. It requires agreement about the materials and requested firing, and payment before firing unless another arrangement is made in writing. An enquiry does not establish a confirmed booking.
These are different conditions from a four-week pottery course on the same page. For kiln bookings, the published cancellation wording allows a possible refund less administration costs when more than seven days' notice is given; within seven days, part or all of the payment may be forfeited. Confirm the terms attached to the specific quote. The page does not establish a comparable whole-load fee or a guaranteed completion date.
The studio is identified here at suburb level in Thornbury. Confirm arrival arrangements directly when a booking is agreed; an old directory address should not substitute for the studio's instructions.
Put collection in the diary as well as firing
Northcote's private-hire terms ask for collection within two weeks of notification before work is moved to the general firing shelves. Adele's kiln terms specify collection within 60 days of notification. These are collection arrangements, not estimates of how long firing takes. Northcote's usual general-service turnaround of seven to fourteen days is also separate from a private booking or a promised event deadline.
Keep five things together: the accepted load list, selected service and total, paid booking date, overflow decision and collection notification. If work is needed for an exhibition or market, give the operator the required date and ask whether they can agree to it before paying. Allow for a rejected piece or additional firing without presenting either as automatically included.
